Airlines increase flight capacity for 2026 AFL Grand Final
Major Australian airlines, including Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia, have significantly increased flight capacity to Melbourne to accommodate fans traveling for the 2026 AFL Grand Final between the Brisbane Lions and the Fremantle Dockers.
Virgin Australia, the official airline of the AFL, has added nearly 4,000 seats on routes between Perth and Melbourne and over 1,000 seats between Brisbane and Melbourne. Qantas and Jetstar have also expanded services, adding seven flights between Brisbane and Melbourne and one between Sydney and Melbourne, providing approximately 1,160 additional seats. To support Fremantle supporters, Qantas has added 13 flights between Perth and Melbourne, totaling roughly 2,300 extra seats.
While airlines are increasing supply, travel costs remain high. One-way fares from Brisbane to Melbourne start at $234 on Jetstar and $375 on Qantas, while Perth to Melbourne one-way fares start from $766, with some Jetstar flights reaching $1,300.
