Australian airport strikes and Jetstar labor disputes disrupt travel
Industrial action is impacting Australian aviation, with strikes involving security, ground service, and airline workers. At Sydney Airport, approximately 400 security workers participated in a two-hour strike, with further actions planned. Additionally, hundreds of Qantas ground service employees conducted a 24-hour walkout. While Qantas stated it has contingency plans to minimize passenger disruption, travelers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys.
In a separate labor dispute, the United Services Union (USU) has announced an escalation of protected industrial action against Jetstar. The union claims the airline has backtracked on substantive wage offers, providing only a 2.1% increase. Planned industrial actions include bans on making non-safety announcements, phoning passengers, and performing certain disruption management duties, such as distributing refreshment vouchers or assisting with rebooking.
Experts note that these disruptions highlight the importance of travel insurance. However, travelers are cautioned that coverage for strikes depends on specific policy terms and whether the industrial action was already announced at the time of purchase.
