Australian Alpine and Coastal Trails Spotlighted for Hikers

The Australian Alps Walking Track (AAWT) stretches roughly 650 km across the high country, climbing about 28,000 m in elevation. Organisers are urging hikers planning a 2026 crossing to collect citizen‑science data on the health of snow‑gum forests, which are under threat from drought, dieback and repeated fires. Photographs and simple health checks of the trees would support a threatened‑species listing effort coordinated by Friends of the Earth.

The Cape to Cape Track in Western Australia’s Margaret River region offers a 135 km coastal walk from Cape Leeuwin to Cape Naturaliste. The trail passes towering 100‑year‑old Karri trees, limestone cliffs, beaches and surf spots, and acknowledges the traditional custodians, the Wadandi people. It provides a range of accommodation options and is promoted as an introduction to longer multi‑day hikes.

Both tracks highlight Australia’s diverse walking opportunities and the importance of preserving natural environments while encouraging outdoor recreation.
