Australian authorities investigate AI-generated abuse and childcare subsidy fraud
Australian law enforcement agencies have launched investigations into two separate matters involving alleged exploitation and financial fraud.
A 41-year-old man from the Gold Coast is facing charges related to online child abuse offences. The investigation began after Australian Border Force officers discovered suspected files on a mobile phone during an examination at Brisbane International Airport. Forensic analysis allegedly identified thousands of files, including material reportedly generated using artificial intelligence to digitally sexualize images of clothed children sourced from social media. The man has been charged with one count of making child exploitation material, an offence that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment.
Separately, the Australian Federal Police and the Department of Education are conducting a national operation, codenamed Fortis-Hailstorm, targeting alleged fraud against government payment programs. This includes raids on properties in the Central Coast and Sydney as part of an investigation into a family day care service. The service is accused of claiming approximately $4 million in childcare subsidy payments since January 2024 for care that was allegedly not provided or was overstated. The broader national effort, Operation Integrity Fusion, aims to address approximately $235 million in identified alleged fraud across seven investigations.
