Australian authorities quarantine citizens after cruise ship hantavirus outbreak

An outbreak of the rodent‑borne hantavirus occurred on the cruise ship MV Hondius, which had departed Argentina in April. Of the 146 passengers and crew, 11 were linked to the virus, three died and a fourth was in intensive care. After the vessel docked in Tenerife, five Australian citizens, one Australian permanent resident and one New Zealand citizen were flown back to Perth on a government‑chartered aircraft.

All seven individuals were placed in strict quarantine at a dedicated facility in Bullsbrook, north of Perth, for at least three weeks. Health Minister Mark Butler said the measures represent some of the toughest quarantine protocols in the world. Officials highlighted lessons learned from the COVID‑19 pandemic, noting that swift, transparent action and the new Australian Centre for Disease Control have improved the country’s capacity to contain such outbreaks.

The incident underscored the importance of rapid response to emerging infectious diseases on international vessels, with Australian authorities applying rigorous isolation and monitoring to prevent further spread.
