Australian aviation workers prepare for industrial action

Aviation workers across Australia are preparing for significant industrial action as disputes over pay and working conditions escalate at major airlines.

Virgin Australia cabin crew are preparing to vote on strike action following a dispute led by the Transport Workers’ Union (TWU). The union is seeking the restoration of pay and conditions to pre-pandemic levels, alongside improved rostering, reduced duty limits, and increased minimum rest periods. The TWU highlighted that Virgin Australia reported a record $501 million profit last financial year, contrasting this with the concessions made by staff during the airline’s 2020 administration.

Simultaneously, Qantas ground workers at major airports in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Perth have commenced a 24-hour strike. The protest targets subcontracting conditions that union representatives claim allow the airline to reduce pay and safety standards. The TWU is calling for Qantas to invest in its workforce through industry-standard pay and more full-time positions.
