Australian backyards evolve into multifunctional living spaces

The Australian backyard is increasingly viewed as a multifunctional extension of the home, serving as an outdoor living room, entertainment area, and play zone. This shift has led to a growing market for backyard enhancements, with the outdoor furniture and enhancement sector in Australia projected to expand by over 12% by 2029.

As these spaces become more complex, homeowners face challenges regarding organization and safety. Research from DePaul University and the University of New Mexico suggests that cluttered outdoor environments can increase stress and cognitive drain. Additionally, improper storage in coastal Australian environments can lead to rapid tool corrosion due to salt and humidity.

Safety remains a critical concern, particularly regarding swimming pools. According to the National Drowning Report 2026, backyard pools accounted for 66% of pool-related drowning deaths in Australia during the 2025/26 period. In New South Wales, government regulations mandate that pool owners maintain child-resistant barriers, such as fencing at least 1.2 meters high, to separate pools from residential buildings and adjoining areas.
