Australian Border Force deploys drones to Torres Strait
The Australian Border Force (ABF) has deployed Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), or drones, to support Operation BROADSTAFF. This initiative aims to detect and disrupt illegal foreign fishing activities across northern Queensland and the Torres Strait.
The Torres Strait encompasses approximately 48,000 square kilometres and includes over 270 islands and reefs. The region presents significant operational challenges for traditional patrols due to thick mangrove vegetation, strong tidal currents, and the presence of predatory animals like crocodiles.
Equipped with advanced optics and sensors, the drones can operate both day and night, providing real-time vision of areas that are difficult or dangerous to access via traditional methods. Acting Deputy Commander Maritime Border Command Nicole Papathanasiou stated that the technology will enhance maritime domain awareness and strengthen the enforcement network established through the multi-agency operation.
