Australian broadcaster ABC urged to improve fairness in Israel coverage

At the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion, antisemitism envoy Jillian Segal criticised the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) for its reporting on Gaza, saying it “created an impression of great negativity about Israel”. She argued that the broadcaster’s coverage showed a “disproportionate” number of stories critical of Israel and called for greater transparency mechanisms.

The discussion also highlighted the broader issue of “false balance” in journalism, warning against giving equal weight to opposing views when one side lacks factual basis. Examples cited include past climate‑change coverage where deniers were presented alongside scientists. The commentary emphasized that journalists should focus on the human cost of conflicts, rather than presenting an equal‑weight narrative that could distort reality.

Segal’s testimony suggests that the ABC may need to review its editorial practices to avoid systemic bias and ensure accurate, fair reporting on the Israel‑Palestine conflict.
