Australia electrification campaign targets policy reforms for households and farmers

A national campaign led by Electrify Australia and more than 30 advocacy groups is calling for significant policy reforms to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to electric alternatives. The campaign seeks to provide targeted support for renters, low-income households, First Nations communities, and farmers to help them adopt efficient electric appliances and vehicles.

Key proposals include legalizing plug-in solar and battery systems to benefit apartment dwellers and renters, as well as updating regulations to allow farmers to share renewable power generated on one part of a property with equipment located elsewhere. Campaigners suggest that full electrification of homes and vehicles could save households up to $5,000 annually.

In New South Wales, the government has allocated $4.7 million to community organizations to assist households with energy literacy and navigating electrification options. Despite the potential savings, advocates warn that inconsistent federal messaging and a lack of clear guidance currently hinder widespread adoption.
