Australian Championship to introduce penalty shootout bonus points in 2026

Football Australia has announced a significant rule change for the 2026 Australian Championship, introducing a bonus point system for matches that end in a draw during the group stage. Under the new regulations, if scores are level after 90 minutes, teams will proceed directly to a penalty shootout without extra time.

While the match will officially be recorded as a draw, the shootout winner will earn two points, while the loser receives one. A standard win in regulation time remains worth three points, and a loss earns zero. This experimental format is intended to increase fan engagement and provide players with high-pressure experience.

The rule applies exclusively to the group stage; from the quarter-finals onward, the competition will revert to traditional knockout rules, including extra time. The decision follows consultations with participating clubs and the Japanese Football Association, which has implemented a similar model.
