Australian councils ban smart glasses to protect public privacy

Several Australian local councils are implementing bans on smart glasses in public facilities to address privacy and safety concerns. The Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council recently moved to prohibit the devices in aquatic facilities, following similar actions by the Canterbury-Bankstown and Brisbane City Councils. Additionally, Melbourne’s Yarra City Council has banned the technology from playgrounds, gyms, and childcare centres.

While smart glasses can serve as essential assistive technology for individuals with visual or hearing impairments, officials expressed concern that the devices are difficult to distinguish from standard eyewear. This poses a risk in areas where patrons have a heightened expectation of privacy, such as swimming pools and change rooms. Concerns have been raised regarding the potential for individuals to record others without consent.

While local governments have taken decisive action, federal lawmakers have been slower to respond. Federal Attorney-General Michelle Rowland has praised the councils' initiatives, and Finance and Public Service Minister Katy Gallaghers noted that the government is seeking advice on providing clear guidance regarding the privacy and security implications of the technology.
