Australian councils implement new waste and recycling bin systems

Local councils in Australia are implementing new waste and recycling systems to comply with state government mandates.

In the City of Casey, Victoria, households will begin receiving a new 80-litre purple-lidded glass recycling bin between September and November 2026. This move is part of the Victorian Government’s requirement for all councils to adopt a four-bin system by July 2027. The city has also integrated food and garden organics (FOGO) bins into its standard service. To mitigate the impact on residents, the council has frozen standard waste charges for the 2026-27 period using savings from its waste reserve.

In the Wentworth Shire, New South Wales, Cleanaway is rolling out a new three-bin kerbside collection system ahead of its official October 5, 2026, commencement date. The new system includes a 240L food and garden waste bin, a 240L recycling bin, and a kitchen caddy. This transition aims to meet the NSW Government’s 2030 mandate for organics recycling and reduce the amount of valuable material sent to landfills.
