Australian courts address domestic violence and strangulation cases
Two separate domestic violence cases were addressed in Australian courts involving physical assaults and strangulation.
In Armidale Local Court, a man narrowly avoided imprisonment after pleading guilty to two counts of common assault and one charge of choking his 12-year-old son. The court heard that the man wrapped both hands around the boy's neck and pinned him down during an incident in October 2025. Defense counsel noted the man has expressed remorse and is currently residing in crisis accommodation. Judge Tania Johnson issued a rebuke, stating the conduct was unacceptable and that “there are consequences” for such violence.
In a separate case at the Supreme Court in Launceston, 26-year-old Hamish Liam Reddy was sentenced for assaulting his 60-year-old mother. Justice Robert Pearce described the incident as a breach of trust, noting that Reddy had strangled and punched his mother during an argument in June 2024. The victim reported continuing feelings of fear and a lack of safety following the trauma. The judge noted that Reddy had threatened to “snap her neck” during the assault.
