Australian courts confront two major child abuse cases

A Canberra churchgoer, Toby Charles Mortlock, has been charged with 21 new counts of historical child sexual abuse, including indecency and intercourse offenses involving children under 10, relating to incidents in the 1980s and 1990s. The charges concern at least eight alleged victims and the case will return to the ACT Supreme Court in July.

In a separate case, a Sydney childcare worker – whose name is under a court‑ordered gag order – faces 192 charges involving 122 children, with allegations that he produced child‑abuse material and sexually touched children over a six‑year period. Arrested in July 2025, the man seeks to keep his identity and the locations of the centres he worked at private, arguing risks to his safety and that of his family. The Australian Federal Police have seized more than two million files from his devices and intend to publish the workplaces to enable further victim identification.

Both cases have prompted strong responses from authorities and victim‑support services, highlighting ongoing scrutiny of child‑protection practices in Australia.
