Australian Cricketers Confront IPL Uncertainty After Matt Kelly’s Retirement

Fast‑bowling all‑rounder Matt Kelly announced his retirement at 31, citing persistent injuries. Over his career with Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers he took 274 wickets, won a BBL title and was signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders, but never featured in an IPL match before being released.

Australian head coach Andrew McDonald warned that several of the country's leading test players may miss IPL 2027 because of a packed international schedule that includes 20 Tests, 14 limited‑overs matches, the 2027 World Cup and series against India, England and others. He named Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green, Travis Head and wicket‑keeper Josh Inglis as players whose IPL availability could be limited, highlighting concerns over injuries and the need to balance national commitments with franchise cricket.
