Australian Defence Force focuses on domain integration amid drone security concerns

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is working toward greater integration across five domains: land, maritime, air, space, and cyber. Lieutenant General Susan Coyle has highlighted the rapid growth of space and cyber capabilities, noting that these domains are essential for modern integrated military effects, such as providing intelligence feeds and cyber protection for naval task groups.

However, recent security concerns have emerged following reports of multiple drone sightings over or near RAAF Base Williamtown in mid-July. The base is a critical installation housing a significant portion of Australia’s F-35A Lightning II fleet and E-7A Wedgetail aircraft, as well as major maintenance facilities and missile assembly sites.

While the origin and operators of the drones remain unknown, the incidents have been reported to the NSW Police Counter-UAS Unit. Defence and Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy have provided limited details regarding specific security measures due to operational security requirements.
