Lily Hooper found dead in Nattai National Park after eight-day search
The body of 18-year-old Lily Hooper has been recovered from Nattai National Park in New South Wales following an eight-day search. Hooper, an experienced hiker, disappeared on August 12 after leaving her home in Oakdale for a solo trip.
The discovery was marked by a tragic miscommunication. For approximately eight to ten minutes, Hooper's family and New South Wales Premier Chris Minns were mistakenly informed that she had been found alive. This error, which caused significant emotional trauma to the family, was attributed by police to communication challenges in the rugged, heavily wooded terrain.
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon issued an unreserved apology for the error. The search operation involved nearly 1,000 personnel, including members of the Australian Defence Force, the State Emergency Service, and various local emergency units. An autopsy is expected to determine the cause of death.
