Australian developers face public opposition to high-rise towers
Developers in Wollongong and Penrith are proceeding with high-rise residential projects despite significant local opposition regarding building height and urban impact.
In Wollongong, a developer for the Smith Street gasworks site has opted to make only minor changes following feedback from residents and the Wollongong City Council. The proposal includes a 30-storey tower, which is more than three times the permitted height. Of the 44 submissions received during the public exhibition, 40 were objections. The council noted that the development disregards safety and local impacts, while the developer maintains the height is strategically justified for the Flinders Street Precinct.
In Penrith, Urban Property Group is seeking approval for a 48-storey residential tower at 614-632 High Street. The project, classified as a State Significant Development, would include 341 dwellings, 68 of which are designated as affordable. While agencies such as Endeavour Energy and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority raised no major issues, 24 out of 26 public submissions were objections. Residents have expressed concerns regarding traffic congestion, visual pollution, and the impact on the community's low-to-mid-rise character.
