Australian diesel prices surge amid Middle East conflict

Australian diesel prices have experienced significant volatility and increases, driven largely by disruptions in the Middle East. Following the start of the Iran war on February 28, 2026, diesel prices rose sharply, at one point exceeding 300 cents per litre.

While Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure throughout 2025 caused some supply risks, Australian terminal gate diesel prices remained relatively stable between 155 and 185 cents per litre during that period. The escalation of the Middle East conflict caused diesel to rise faster than crude oil, widening the price gap. The average difference between diesel and crude oil increased from approximately 102 cents per litre before the war to 148 cents per litre afterward.

These rising costs are creating significant financial pressure for Australian grain growers, who face high fuel bills during both the seeding and harvest stages for equipment such as headers, chaser bins, and trucks.
