Australian dollar faces uncertainty amid RBA rate hike speculation

The Australian dollar is experiencing volatility amid conflicting market expectations regarding interest rate hikes by the Reserve Bank of Australia. Recent inflation reports and strong household spending have increased market bets on a potential rate hike as early as next month, with the probability of a September hike rising to 52%. Major institutions like NAB suggest a possible hike in late September, while CBA and ANZ lean toward November.

However, some forecasters warn that the currency's recent rally may be nearing its peak. Analysts from Santander and SB1 Markets suggest the Australian dollar could retreat toward 70 US cents by the end of the year. These bearish outlooks are driven by expectations that the central bank may stand pat, potential profit-taking following a 3.5 per cent gain since July, and the possibility that a resolution to Middle East conflicts could lower oil prices, weighing on commodity-exposed currencies.
