Australian economic pressures mount amid falling real wages
Economic analyses indicate that many Australians are facing increased financial strain due to rising living costs, expensive housing, and weak productivity. Despite ongoing economic growth, households—particularly younger Australians—are struggling with high rents and falling affordability.
Research from The Australia Institute suggests that falling real wages are significantly impacting workers. Using predictions from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), the analysis estimates it could take until 2037 for workers to regain the purchasing power they held at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. The report criticizes the RBA for focusing on the risks of wage growth while wages remain stagnant relative to soaring prices and corporate profits. Additionally, the analysis points to government policies, such as wage caps on public servants, as factors contributing to suppressed wage growth across both public and private sectors.
