Australian ETF market shows growing interest despite knowledge gaps

Research from iShares indicates a significant gap between interest and participation in the Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) market among Australian investors. While only 16 per cent of Australians currently invest in ETFs, 32 per cent expressed intent to do so within the next 12 months.

Barriers to adoption include a lack of understanding, with 55 per cent of respondents reporting little to no knowledge of ETFs. Other obstacles cited include concerns over market losses, difficulty choosing between products, and hidden fees. The research also noted a gender gap in financial literacy and participation, with women reporting lower levels of ETF knowledge and lower investment rates compared to men.

In the context of generating passive income, dividend-focused ETFs on the ASX are being utilized to provide diversification and regular distributions. Specific options include the YMAX ETF, which targets monthly income through a portfolio of blue-chip shares, and the VHY ETF, which offers exposure to high-yield companies. Some funds, such as those from Betashares, aim to provide franked income that exceeds the net income yield of the broader Australian sharemarket.
