Australian executive released from Myanmar jail

Ye Khaung Kyaw, an Australian business executive and former head of the American Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar (AmCham), has been released from jail in Yangon after more than 100 days of detention. His release follows a court ruling on Tuesday, though officials have not clarified if the charges were dismissed, if he was convicted, or if he faces deportation.

Kyaw was detained in June alongside former AmCham president Adam Castillo, a U.S. citizen who was released and deported last week without explanation. The legal proceedings stemmed from allegations by the current AmCham board regarding breach of trust and the misappropriation of association assets. Specifically, the complaints involved a $300,000 contract with the Washington-based lobbying firm Mercury Public Affairs.

Supporters of the accused individuals have maintained that the allegations are baseless and contradicted by documentary evidence. The Myanmar military-backed government has not issued an official statement regarding the conclusion of the case.
