Australian Federal Police to investigate diplomatic memo leak

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has confirmed it will investigate the unauthorized leak of diplomatic correspondence between Australian and Japanese officials. The investigation follows a request from Coalition Senator James Paterson regarding the disclosure of a memo concerning Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s controversial comments about Shizuoka Crown melons.

During a July podcast appearance, Albanese discussed two premium melons gifted to him by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. His hand gestures while describing the fruit were interpreted by critics as suggestive, leading to accusations of sexism and disrespect toward the Japanese leader. While Albanese refused to apologize, maintaining that bilateral relations remain strong, Japanese officials reportedly sent a letter to Australian counterparts describing the media coverage as “sensationalised reporting” and stating that no official action would be taken.

The AFP stated that the matter has been referred to its Special Investigations Command for review. This development occurs as Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles prepares to meet with Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi in Canberra, marking the first ministerial meeting between the two nations since the controversy emerged.
