Australian firearms dealers report heavy losses amid new gun laws

Firearms dealers in Australia are reporting significant financial losses following the introduction of new firearm restrictions in New South Wales. A survey by the Shooting Industry Foundation of Australia (SIFA) found that average dealer revenue fell by 38.8 per cent nationally in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year. The impact is most severe in New South Wales, where average revenue declined by 58.8 per cent and firearm sales dropped by 76.6 per cent.

Business owners in the Riverina region report that trade has plunged by approximately two-thirds. Local retailers, such as the Riverina Firearms Centre and Redneck Shootin’ Supplies, cite the new limits on the number of firearms license holders can possess—typically four guns, or up to 10 for specific categories like primary producers—as a primary cause for the downturn. Additionally, delays in permit approvals, sometimes exceeding six months, have further deterred customers.

The financial impact on responding businesses is estimated at $22.6 million, with $13.3 million of that occurring in New South Wales. Industry outlooks remain poor; 91.7 per cent of NSW respondents expressed concern about the upcoming year, and 47.9 per cent indicated that business closure could become necessary. The industry is also facing an upcoming firearm buyback scheme scheduled for November.
