Australian football referees strike over employment dispute
Approximately 90 elite football referees in Australia have gone on strike following an employment dispute with Football Australia. Members of the Professional Football Referees Association (PFRA) have withdrawn their services for the Australia Cup, the 2026 Australian Championship, and various A-League pre-season and trial matches.
The dispute centers on a proposed employment structure. Under the new model, referees would be contracted by Football Australia for certain competitions but would sign separate contracts with the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) to officiate A-League Men and Women matches. The PFRA argues that because the APL is controlled by the clubs, this arrangement creates a potential conflict of interest. The association is seeking to have officials employed by Football Australia or an independent organization, and has requested that existing contracts be extended until June 30, 2027.
PFRA president Evgeny Vizelman stated that the decision to withdraw services was not taken lightly, noting that officials are being asked to perform highly scrutinized roles without employment certainty and, in some instances, without receiving payment for completed work.
