Australian Government launches dementia prevention campaign for 50-year-olds
The Australian Federal Government is launching an unprecedented national health campaign by sending letters to 340,000 citizens who turned 50 in the past year. The letters urge recipients to take proactive steps to protect their brain health and reduce the risk of developing dementia.
Aged Care and Seniors Minister Sam Rae stated that this is the first time the government has used proactive, targeted messaging for younger people to invest in long-term brain health. The initiative follows expert warnings that nearly half of dementia cases could potentially be prevented or delayed through lifestyle interventions.
The guidance provided in the letters includes maintaining a balanced diet, staying physically active, managing diabetes, monitoring heart health, checking vision and hearing, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, and remaining socially and mentally engaged. Recipients can also use a QR code to calculate a personalized dementia risk score.
