Australian grain farmers face harvest labor shortages due to visa delays

Australian grain farmers are facing significant labor shortages during the harvest season due to delays in working holiday maker (WHM) visa processing. In the Wimmera region, grain grower Craig Henderson reported having less than half of his required crew, which typically includes seasonal workers from Canada.

The delays stem from a government-imposed slowdown on WHM visas intended to reduce overall migration numbers and prioritize skilled visas for the construction sector to address housing shortages. While Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke recently announced that processing for WHM visas would resume and agricultural visas would be elevated, a significant backlog remains.

Farmers warn that the timing is critical, as grain quality and value decrease the longer crops remain in the fields. The current shortage is exacerbated by low local unemployment rates, making it difficult to find domestic replacements for seasonal foreign workers.
