Australian health ministers demand action on aged care bed block

State and territory health ministers in Australia are calling for immediate federal intervention to address a growing aged care bed block crisis. More than 3,600 patients are currently occupying hospital beds despite being cleared for discharge, due to a lack of available federally funded aged care or NDIS placements.

Ministers have urged Federal Health Minister Mark Butler to increase the availability of Support at Home packages to facilitate patient transitions. While the federal government has committed $1.7 billion to construct 5,000 additional aged care beds, officials in New South Wales have cautioned that the implementation of these beds may take time.

Health leaders from Queensland and South Australia have highlighted the strain on the healthcare system, noting that the volume of patients waiting for placements is comparable to the capacity of major metropolitan hospitals. They argue that resolving the block is essential to freeing up hospital resources for acute care patients.
