Australian hiker discovered dead on Wyoming’s Tetons

A 28‑year‑old Australian man who had been missing for almost a week was located dead on the west slope of the Tetons near the Wigwams area in Wyoming. He was attempting a thru‑hike of the Continental Divide Trail and had been communicating with his family via a Garmin satellite device, with the last check‑in on July 23. Evidence suggests he may have fallen from a steep, high‑altitude ridgeline that separates Grand Teton National Park and the Jedediah Smith Wilderness.

Teton County Search and Rescue (TCSAR) assembled a helicopter short‑haul team, spotted a bright orange backpack from the air, and recovered the hiker’s body below a ridge south of North Wigwam Peak. The remains were taken to TCSAR headquarters in Jackson and then transferred to the Teton County Coroner’s Office. TCSAR expressed condolences to the family and thanked the federal agencies that assisted in the operation.
