Australian Home Batteries Boost Grid Efficiency, Reach 430,000 Installations

AEMO chief executive Daniel Westerman said the growing fleet of home batteries is delivering “enormous benefits” to the electricity grid, cutting system costs and lowering consumer power bills even without being coordinated as virtual power plants. Australia now has about 7 GW of grid‑scale battery capacity, enough to cover roughly 20 % of peak demand, and more than 420,000 residential batteries installed through the federal Cheaper Home Batteries scheme – a figure that has risen to over 430,000 households. Clean Energy Regulator executive Carl Binning noted the new rebate settings have reduced the average system size from 40‑50 kWh to around 20‑30 kWh, with about 25 % of installations replacing older small‑scale systems. A parallel surge in rooftop solar, with a record quarter of about 790 MW added, is further supporting the transition to a more resilient and affordable electricity system.
