Australian industry groups call for stable skilled migration

The Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) is calling for reforms to the skilled migration system to address persistent workforce shortages in manufacturing, housing, infrastructure, health, and aged care. Ai Group chief executive Innes Willox stated that domestic training alone cannot meet current and future workforce requirements and emphasized that skilled migration complements local investment.

To improve the system, Ai Group has proposed four recommendations to the Joint Standing Committee on Migration: maintaining current permanent skilled migration intake levels, streamlining skills and credential recognition for critical occupations, ensuring more predictable visa processing under specific programs, and implementing a public communication strategy regarding the role of migration.

In the Geelong region, industry leaders have echoed these sentiments, noting that while local apprenticeships and training are essential, they cannot bridge every skills gap. Proponents argue that tailored migration settings for regional areas are necessary to boost production, unlock investment, and deliver vital energy and infrastructure projects.
