Australian industry groups urge PM to fix Working Holiday visa delays

Industry groups in Australia are urging Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to address delays in the Working Holiday Maker visa program. More than 20 organizations, including the National Farmers’ Federation, Tourism & Transport Forum, and the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, have expressed concerns regarding the impact of slow visa processing on vital sectors.

Agricultural leaders note that seasonal workers are critical to food production, with Working Holiday Makers accounting for approximately 44% of the horticulture workforce during peak harvest. The National Farmers’ Federation stated these workers are essential for maintaining food and fibre production. Similarly, the tourism sector highlights the economic contribution of these visitors, who spent A$4.4 billion in Australia last year.

Industry representatives warn that reducing the number of seasonal workers could lead to significant economic losses. Estimates suggest a reduction of 20,000 workers in regional areas could result in a $200 million annual hit to local economies and the loss of over 1,000 jobs. The Home Affairs department has noted that applications are taking longer than usual, with priority being given to those already within the country.
