Australian industry leaders address banking regulations and labor shortages
Australian industry leaders have addressed regulatory and labor challenges facing their respective sectors. Simon Birmingham, CEO of the Australian Banking Association, discussed the impact of strict anti-money laundering laws. He noted that while banks must enforce these national laws to suppress organized crime and criminal syndicates, the increased requirements for identity verification and source-of-funds analysis have caused customer frustration.
In the construction sector, Denita Wawn, CEO of Master Builders Australia, commented on migration policies. She highlighted a significant labor shortage, stating the industry currently lacks approximately 140,000 workers and faces an annual deficit of 85,000 people if policies do not change. Wawn expressed support for prioritizing skilled visas for trades but criticized requirements that force sponsored workers to go offshore to obtain visas, arguing such delays hinder the ability to complete housing and infrastructure projects.
