Australian investors lack ETF knowledge as high‑yield dividend shares attract interest
A new iShares survey finds that most Australian investors have limited understanding of exchange‑traded funds. About 55 % report low or no knowledge, 26 % have never heard of ETFs and only 16 % currently invest, though the proportion doubles among those planning to add ETFs in the next year. Key barriers include market losses (39 %), difficulty choosing products (36 %), hidden fees (31 %) and lack of understanding (30 %). The report also highlights a gender gap: 64 % of women versus 46 % of men say they know little or nothing about ETFs, and women are less likely to own them.
In parallel, Australian dividend‑paying shares are drawing attention from income‑seeking investors, especially those offering yields above 10 %. The YMAX ETF, which tracks the country's 20 largest blue‑chip stocks, posted a 12‑month gross distribution yield of 10.4 % with monthly payouts. Such high‑yield options are riskier, often linked to cyclical businesses or discounted prices, but they are appealing to investors willing to tolerate greater volatility.
