Australian investors target Sri Lankan manufacturing and sustainable industries
A group of Australian investors and business leaders has pledged support for new projects aimed at strengthening Sri Lanka’s production economy. These investments target sectors that support tangible output and local production capacity, aligning with government efforts to diversify the economic base and reduce reliance on imports and foreign debt.
During a meeting in Victoria, Australia, attended by a Sri Lankan delegation led by Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunnetti, several specific sectors were identified for potential ventures. These include manufacturing, agriculture, and sustainable industries. Key proposals include the introduction of environmentally sustainable technologies to the apparel industry, renewable energy systems, and modern recycling methods.
Other discussed initiatives involve a commercial-scale dairy operation for approximately 2,000 cattle, a climate-resilient livestock breeding program, and a major manufacturing facility specializing in 3D-printing technology using recycled plastics. The latter project is expected to be centered around the Industrial Development Board’s Ekala Industrial Estate. Australian investors noted improving transparency and credibility within Sri Lanka’s investment environment.
