Australian judoka Maria Swan wins silver at 2026 Commonwealth Games

Maria Swan, a 24‑year‑old Australian judoka, captured silver in the women’s –78 kg division at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The medal came after the sport was reinstated when Glasgow took over the Games, following its removal from the original Victoria program. Swan led early with a yuko but was overtaken in the final minute when England’s defending champion Emma Reid scored an ippon to retain the gold. Swan said she was disappointed not to win gold but pleased with her performance, noting a minor elbow injury from the bout.

In the men’s +100 kg category, Australia’s Kayhan Ozcicek‑Takagi also earned silver, losing to Giannis Antoniou, who secured Cyprus’s first gold medal of the Games.
