Australian Lamb Prices Slip as Export Returns Lag Behind Record Farmgate Levels
Winter yarding indicators in Australia fell this week, with the Eastern States Trade Lamb Indicator down 2% and the National Mutton Indicator down 5% week‑on‑week. The seasonal winter premium has retraced, and supply scarcity remains limited, keeping lamb prices high at the yard.
Despite record farmgate lamb prices, export returns have not kept pace. Australian mutton exports in July fell to their lowest monthly volumes since 2011, while New Zealand export values rose only because of a weaker NZD, not stronger buyer demand. Slaughter rates have dropped, with the New Zealand lamb kill 159,000 head lower than a year earlier, reflecting procurement pressure and a shift to heavier lambs. Analysts warn that without stronger export performance, farmgate prices could correct sharply as processing volumes rise in the new season. An emerging El Niño forecast may further affect supply dynamics into the next year.
