Australian livestock auctions see strong demand for stud rams
Recent livestock auctions in Australia have demonstrated strong demand for high-quality sheep genetics. At the Moorundie Park Poll Merinos sale in Gulnare, all 100 rams were sold, with prices averaging $2,876 and reaching a top of $9,000. The highest-priced lot, a 15-month-old ram, was purchased by Babirra Dohne and Poll Merino stud principals Craig and Lynda Farrow.
Similarly, the Gooramma Poll Dorset annual on-property sale in Galong saw significant activity driven by a thriving sheepmeat market. All 166 rams sold, averaging $4,219, with 30 stud rams averaging $6,350. The top-priced ram, Gooramma 250056, sold for $21,000 to Garry Armstrong of Armdale Park Poll Dorsets and Karl Sinclair of Boree Lane Poll Dorsets. Buyers highlighted traits such as carcass weight, body depth, and eating quality as primary drivers for the high prices.
