Australian livestock studs report successful ram sales

Australian livestock studs reported successful ram sales, marked by high clearance rates and record averages.

Shellal Poll Dorset and Southdown stud celebrated its 60th year of operation with a complete clearance of 127 Poll Dorset rams. The Poll Dorset rams averaged $1,966, matching the average from the stud's inaugural sale. Southdown rams also saw strong demand, with 35 of 40 rams sold to a top price of $6,000. Stud principal Tanya King noted that the results reflect farmer confidence and a need to rebuild ewe numbers following previous drought conditions.

Melashdan Dorper and White Dorper stud achieved record sale averages at its 17th annual on-property sale. All 115 rams were sold, resulting in an overall average of $3,803. The Dorper rams averaged $5,040, an increase of more than $3,000 from the previous year, with a top price of $6,600. White Dorper rams averaged $3,144. Stud principal Gary Fiegert attributed the success to excellent seasonal paddock feed and strong interest from both local and interstate buyers.
