Australian local councils hold mayoral elections and historic appointments

In the Riverina region of Australia, Jane Hunter and Lisa Minogue have made history as the first women elected as mayors of the Lockhart Shire Council and Bland Shire Council, respectively. Additionally, Pam Halliburton has become the second female mayor in the history of the Junee Shire Council.

In North Sydney, the council is preparing for a mayoral vote among its ten councillors. Current mayor Zoë Baker, who has held the position since January 2022, faces speculation regarding whether she will seek another term or if the role will pass to her deputy, MaryAnn Beregi. The upcoming vote occurs as local political dynamics potentially serve as a precursor to the New South Wales state election.
