Australia faces economic pressure from housing and AI market volatility

Australia is facing significant economic headwinds as household wealth, which reached nearly $19 trillion in June, confronts a cooling property market and volatility in the artificial intelligence sector. House prices are projected to face a substantial correction, while available housing stock has dropped 46 per cent year-on-year.

Simultaneously, concerns regarding an “AI bubble” are emerging, potentially impacting superannuation portfolios. Companies like Anthropic face scrutiny over valuations, and neocloud data centre operators, including the Australian firm Firmus, are navigating a high-cost capital environment.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is also navigating complex inflationary pressures. While the unemployment rate unexpectedly rose to 4.7% in September, RBA officials have expressed concern that rising oil and fuel prices—driven by geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine—could keep inflation high. RBA Assistant Governor Christopher Kent noted that the labor market may be loosening faster than anticipated, complicating the bank's efforts to balance inflation control with economic stability.
