Australian Medical Association updates doctor role policy as AI health misinformation rises

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has released its first major revision of the doctor’s role position statement since 2011. The updated document adds explicit sections on scope of practice, clinical governance, patient costs and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in care. AMA vice‑president Professor Julian Rait emphasized that while AI can support decision‑making, it cannot replace clinical judgement and must be overseen by doctors, with transparent limits and escalation procedures.

AMA president Dr Danielle McMullen warned that Australians are increasingly exposed to conflicting health information online, including AI‑generated advice that may appear credible but be inaccurate. The statement underlines doctors’ responsibility for diagnosis, risk management and patient communication, stressing that trusted doctor‑patient relationships are essential to combat misinformation and ensure safe care.
