Australian Minister defends staffing decisions and criticizes One Nation

Cabinet Minister Murray Watt has defended the Albanese government against allegations of political favoritism regarding the allocation of parliamentary staff. Responding to claims by One Nation leader Pauline Hanson that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is weaponizing the staffing system against minor parties, Watt stated that recent allocations were responses to specific requests. He noted that additional staff were provided to various MPs representing large regional electorates, including Barnaby Joyce and Bob Katter.

Watt also criticized the internal structure of One Nation, alleging that “unelected, shadowy figures” exert significant control over the party and often overrule the needs of elected members. He specifically identified party director James Ashby as an individual who wields substantial influence within the organization.

Despite these criticisms, Watt noted he has engaged with One Nation MP David Farley regarding support for Murray-Darling Basin communities, which recently included a $50 million commitment to boost regional jobs and a $14.5 million package for SunRice expansion in the electorate of Farrer.
