Helen Haines loses both legs in alleged car attack

Independent Australian MP Helen Haines, 65, has undergone bilateral leg amputations following a deliberate car attack in Wangaratta, Victoria. The incident occurred on Monday, 19 October 2026, when Haines was allegedly struck twice by a Toyota Land Cruiser near her electorate office.

Haines' husband, Phil Haines, confirmed from The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne that while the injuries were catastrophic, her condition is stable and her mental faculties remain intact. The family has requested that well-wishers make donations to Save the Children instead of sending flowers.

Brendan Nugent, 43, appeared in the Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday facing multiple charges, including intentionally causing serious injury, dangerous driving causing serious injury, and harming a Commonwealth public official. Nugent did not apply for bail and remains in custody.

The attack has sparked national debate regarding the safety of public officials and the rise of political violence in Australia. Governor-General Sam Mostyn called for national unity and civility following the incident.
