Australian MP Liesl Tesch Threatened on Social Media, Suspect Bailed with Restrictions

A 43‑year‑old unemployed man, Christopher Mark Whitty, posted a series of threatening messages on Facebook aimed at Gosford MP Liesl Tesch. The posts included threats of violence, property damage and statements that he intended to locate and harm the MP in public. Brisbane Water Police District officers arrested Whitty at his home in Tascott and charged him with using a carriage service to threaten serious harm.

In court, Judge Lisa Viney granted Whitty bail but imposed strict conditions: he must remain at home 24 hours a day unless he is in the company of his 74‑year‑old father, and he is banned from entering the Gosford suburb except to attend court. MP Tesch described the incident as “sad,” noting that such behaviour discourages constructive community discussion and can deter people from seeking public office.

The case highlights concerns over online harassment of elected officials and the legal response to threats made via social‑media platforms.
