Australian National University apologizes to whistleblower Liz Allen
The Australian National University (ANU) has issued an unreserved apology and provided an undisclosed financial settlement to demographer Liz Allen following her allegations of bullying and intimidation. The university described its treatment of Dr. Allen as “indefensible” and admitted to the “maladministration of several processes.”
Dr. Allen, a former staff-elected member of the ANU Council, previously testified before a parliamentary inquiry regarding misconduct by senior leadership. She alleged that then-chancellor Julie Bishop and other leaders engaged in hostile behavior, including making false allegations of improper activity against her during council meetings. The university acknowledged that false and unjustified publications were made about Dr. Allen.
This resolution follows a period of leadership turnover at the institution, including the resignations of former chancellor Julie Bishop and former vice-chancellor Genevieve Bell. Dr. Allen stated she is pleased with the resolution and expressed a desire to help the university rebuild trust and improve protections for future whistleblowers.
