Australian National University hits record low in global rankings

The Australian National University (ANU) has fallen to its lowest position ever in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The institution dropped to 77th place, a significant decline from its peak ranking of 47th in 2017.

This downward trend follows a period of institutional upheaval, including governance controversies, job cuts, and a reported $100 million revenue loss. Critics and union representatives have attributed the decline to systemic failures and leadership issues.

Despite the drop in overall score, ANU acting provost Professor Joan Leach noted that the university achieved its strongest teaching results since 2021, maintaining that the research environment remains a high-ranking pillar of the institution.
