HMAS Leeuwin hidden camera discovery sparks Navy investigation

A hidden video recording device was discovered on the HMAS Leeuwin, a Royal Australian Navy ship, while it was docked in Cairns, Queensland. The device was reportedly located in a cabin or shower facility used by female sailors.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has confirmed the incident and identified an ADF member as a person of interest. The matter has been referred to the Joint Military Police Unit, which is working alongside civilian authorities. Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Matt Buckley has condemned the act as a “despicable betrayal of trust” and has ordered a 100% audit of all bathrooms across the Navy fleet to ensure personnel safety.

Senator Jacqui Lambie raised the issue in the Australian Senate, noting allegations that footage from the cameras may have been uploaded online prior to their discovery. She has called for an independent investigation, arguing that the Defence department should not be responsible for investigating its own culture. The HMAS Leeuwin has remained alongside in Cairns to facilitate the investigation and provide support to the crew.
